Louisiana State Acceptable Forms of Identification for Purchasing Alcohol
Hey Louisiana! If you serve or sell alcohol in Louisiana State, you are likely already aware of how imperative it is for you to check the ID of every customer in order to verify they are of age before selling or serving them alcohol, but did you know there are specific types of IDs that are considered acceptable for the sale and service of alcohol? In addition, there are also some IDs that are not considered acceptable for alcohol sales and service.
Let’s take a look at what forms of identification are considered acceptable for the sale and service of alcohol in Louisiana State per the Louisiana ATC:
- A driver’s license issued in Louisiana or another U.S. State
- A special identification card issued in Louisiana or another U.S. State
- A passport or visa issued by the U.S. government or another country/nation
- A military or federal ID that is issued by the U.S. government
If a customer presents one of the above ID’s to you, the next step is to confirm their ID includes the below features:
- A photograph of the customer who is presenting the ID
- The customer’s date of birth
So long as a customer’s ID is on the list of acceptable forms of identification listed above, includes the customer’s photograph and date of birth AND shows they are over 21 years of age you can serve or sell them alcohol!
What are considered unacceptable forms of identification for the sale and service of alcohol in Louisiana State per the Louisiana ATC?
If a customer hands you one of the forms of identification that were included in the above list of acceptable forms of identification and you notice any of the below issues, their ID can no longer be considered valid for the purpose of alcohol sales and service:
- If their ID is damaged
- If their ID is expired (always check the expiration date!)
- If their ID is altered is some way
Additionally, the below forms of identification are not considered acceptable for the sale and service of alcohol:
- A birth certificate
- A university ID
If a customer presents you with either of the above IDs (or any other ID not included in the list of acceptable forms of identification) you cannot serve or sell them alcohol.
As an alcohol server or seller it is important to check and sign off on acceptable forms of identification before serving or selling a customer alcohol to prevent yourself from getting into any sort of trouble with the law!
